The M.S. and Ph.D. programs focus on research, with both requiring a thesis or dissertation. Typically, students should complete an M.S. or equivalent degree before pursuing the Ph.D. program. Ph.D. candidates must select at least one minor in a complementary field like Economics. The primary goal of graduate studies in the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management is to recognize, analyze, solve, and propose solutions for significant economic challenges at local, regional, national, and global levels. Accordingly, Dyson graduate students develop skills in a problem-focused setting, learning to approach issues through an economic lens, formulate hypotheses grounded in economic theory, and validate them empirically. The core educational aim is to cultivate lifelong learners and critical thinkers equipped with advanced analytical tools to tackle emerging challenges.
Students are normally expected to obtain the M.S. or equivalent degree before entering the Ph.D. program.
An undergraduate major in agricultural economics is not required for admission, but a lack of intermediate-level economics is a deficiency that will lengthen the student's program. First-year calculus is also important for Ph.D. level work.
