The Global and Public Health Sciences (GPHS) program is available through either the College of Human Ecology or the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This major is ideal for students aiming to pursue graduate studies and leadership roles in government agencies or NGOs, addressing health challenges both domestically and worldwide. Public health focuses on preventing disease and enhancing community well-being across all population sizes. The GPHS curriculum equips students with research methodologies and practical skills for tackling public health issues in local and international contexts. Unlike clinical professionals who treat individual patients, public health specialists implement educational programs and policy initiatives that impact entire communities, targeting concerns like chronic diseases, food insecurity, infectious diseases, environmental quality, and healthcare access. Effective population health improvement frequently demands an interdisciplinary strategy incorporating biomedical, behavioral, social, political, and environmental sciences, while respecting cultural and ethical considerations.
Career prospects in public health are expanding rapidly. The GPHS major prepares students for diverse professional paths in public service, research, healthcare innovation, and clinical fields: Potential specializations include epidemiology, health policy, global health, environmental health, and biostatistics Clinical professions such as nursing, physician assistance, physical therapy, or pharmacy Research-oriented careers applying scientific methods to enhance health outcomes worldwide Many of these career trajectories will necessitate advanced degrees like a Master of Public Health. Students should consult with academic advisors to tailor their undergraduate studies to specific graduate program requirements and career goals.
