The Biology & Society program is an interdisciplinary degree that enables students to integrate biological science studies with coursework examining the societal and moral implications of modern biology. Alongside building a biological foundation, majors develop an understanding of biology's social contexts and how biological factors influence current societal challenges. This program welcomes students from both the Arts & Sciences and Agriculture and Life Sciences colleges. It's ideal for those pursuing careers in healthcare, law, policy, business, research, or education. The Biology & Society curriculum bridges biological training with social science and humanities approaches to examining biology's political, ethical, and societal dimensions. Contemporary pressing issues – including genetic engineering, medical ethics, disease management, environmental sustainability, and nature versus nurture debates – all have biological roots while simultaneously representing significant social challenges. This major equips students with the analytical tools and interdisciplinary perspective needed to thoughtfully address these complex bio-social concerns.
