The Columbia MFA Dramaturgy program looks for driven, innovative thinkers eager to expand their theatrical expertise while forging new creative partnerships and reimagining career possibilities. Dramaturgs serve as dynamic bridges within creative teams—both versatile theatre practitioners and dedicated scholars who immerse themselves in each production's world while shaping its evolution. They combine analytical rigor with boundless creativity, balancing artistic empathy with audience awareness, all while excelling in collaboration. Often, top dramaturgs bring experience from other theatre disciplines. Our School of the Arts program envisions expansive career paths for dramaturgy students—not only traditional roles like literary management and production dramaturgy, but also future leadership as artistic directors, producers, and cultural institution creators.
