Become a leader in social studies education research. Our alumni frequently pursue research careers at universities or educational institutions. Doctoral candidates complete coursework that provides deep expertise in social studies education, preparing them as specialists in their chosen research area. The program fosters the growth of students' academic identities, helping them establish their position as researchers addressing current social studies challenges. Students participate in scholarly activities including collaborative research, conference presentations, academic publishing, student mentorship, teaching exploration, and intellectual community building. Candidates choose courses from Teachers College, Columbia University, and NYC's Doctoral Consortium to specialize in areas like historical interpretation, memory studies, civic engagement, peace education, or global learning. Through foundational and advanced research methodology courses, students gain the skills needed for independent dissertation work, with guidance from faculty advisors and program instructors.
In order to be eligible for admission, international applicants must hold, or be in the process of obtaining, the equivalent of a U.S. baccalaureate degree.
