The Economics Department provides a doctoral program culminating in a PhD, with students obtaining MA and MPhil degrees along the way. With roots tracing back to influential scholars like John Bates Clark, Wesley Clair Mitchell, Harold Hotelling, and William Vickrey, the department maintains this legacy through its dedicated, research-focused faculty and students engaged in both theoretical and applied economics. The program collaborates closely with Columbia's Graduate School of Business and School of International and Public Affairs. Columbia's economics graduate program emphasizes rigorous academic preparation while fostering creative, independent research. Students develop proficiency in core economic methodologies and specialize in two advanced fields. Weekly faculty-student workshops serve as vital platforms for idea exchange, staying updated on cutting-edge research, and exploring emerging topics. These workshops cover areas such as macro/monetary economics, econometrics, labor/applied micro, international economics, economic theory, industrial organization, strategy, and development/environment.
