The Doctor of Philosophy program in Communications provides an interdisciplinary exploration of how people interact with media across cultural, social, political, historical, economic, and technological dimensions. Students work closely with faculty advisors from diverse fields to design personalized study plans utilizing graduate-level resources from humanities, social sciences, arts, and professional disciplines. We aim to bridge Columbia's renowned journalism heritage with scholarly research in humanities and social sciences to deepen insights about media's role in society. Past dissertation topics have examined misinformation in political discourse, civilian experiences with news coverage, changing conventions in photographic presentation, verification practices in digital journalism, and media's influence on political movements.
