The undergraduate program is structured to establish a foundation for creating, enhancing, and comprehending materials and their processes within engineered systems. Integrating principles from physics, chemistry, and related fields, it offers a unified framework suitable for direct engineering applications or further specialized study. The focus lies on core principles that connect atomic-to-microscopic-level phenomena with material characteristics and processing techniques, including the design and management of industrial material processes. Required courses and electives balance academic depth with adaptability, allowing students to concentrate on specialized fields such as nanomaterials, sustainable energy materials, infrastructure and manufacturing materials, biomedical materials, and next-generation electronic materials.

A central principle of our program is exploring the connections between materials synthesis, processing, structure, and properties, which shapes both the curriculum and faculty research. Research initiatives encompass polycrystalline silicon for display technologies, semiconductor materials for photonics and renewable energy, magnetic nanostructures for data storage and computing, functional ceramics for energy storage and conversion systems, metal electrodeposition and corrosion studies, as well as computational modeling of high-temperature systems. By participating in research teams, students acquire practical skills and frequently collaborate with industry and government research facilities on innovative projects.
