The applied physics program equips students with essential skills, hands-on experience, and career-ready preparation, featuring options to pursue an economics minor or business-focused coursework. Recent graduates have pursued diverse paths—entering applied physics or physics graduate programs, attending medical school, or securing positions in technical and financial sectors immediately after earning their bachelor's degree.

Undergraduate research opportunities abound within the department's active research initiatives, spanning fusion and space plasma physics, optical and laser physics, and condensed matter physics. Students can earn academic credit by collaborating with faculty on research projects or independent studies. Additionally, applied physics undergraduates may engage in part-time research during the academic year or full-time summer positions, either at Columbia or through the NSF REU program across the country. This practical research complements classroom learning, while advanced lab courses and a student-led seminar provide exposure to real-world applied physics challenges and experimental techniques.
