The Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology offers two undergraduate degree options. The main program focuses on environmental biology, while the secondary concentration explores human evolutionary biology. These distinct tracks cater to students with varying academic goals through significantly different curricular focuses and requirements.
The environmental biology program highlights biological principles and interdisciplinary knowledge crucial for careers in biodiversity conservation. This curriculum prepares graduates for advanced studies in ecology, evolutionary biology, conservation science, and environmental policy, or for immediate employment in conservation fields or science education.
Addressing environmental challenges requires comprehensive interdisciplinary understanding, making diverse coursework and exposure to contemporary research essential. Students can gain practical experience through conservation internships with affiliated organizations, which contribute to the research needed for the mandatory senior thesis project.
Students must obtain approval from the director of undergraduate studies and submit their environmental biology major declaration at the department office on Schermerhorn Extension's 10th floor.
