The Barnard Economics Department's core mission is to offer undergraduate liberal arts students a comprehensive, challenging program encompassing both theoretical and applied economics. To fulfill this objective, our curriculum:
Delivers solid foundations in neoclassical economic principles, contemporary statistical techniques, and their practical applications across conventional economic disciplines,
Integrates this instruction within a wider framework of economic science, particularly emphasizing philosophical, historical, and institutional perspectives that connect economics with other social sciences and humanities,
Examines diverse methodological approaches and evidentiary forms for analyzing economic issues, assessing policy discussions, and evaluating the wider societal impacts of economic theories.
The Economics and Mathematics major shares the same foundational coursework and sequential structure, but enhances its quantitative focus as a specialized concentration. This program offers particularly robust mathematical preparation, making it ideal for students considering graduate studies in economics, where advanced mathematical skills often exceed the standard Economics major requirements.
