Jazz Studies students are strongly urged to hone their abilities within a broad musical landscape while mastering the timeless works of jazz legends. The exclusive CSU Jazz Program provides students with greater personalized guidance and dedicated time with faculty mentors.
Participants acquire practical skills applicable to diverse performance careers, both within and beyond campus settings. The program features regular masterclasses and performances with renowned visiting artists. Previous guests have included jazz luminaries like John Fedchock, John Riley, Dave Pietro, Paul McKee, Walt Weiskopf, Scott Wendholt, Rich Perry, Greg Gisbert, Zach Brock, Erik Deutsch, Art Lande, Nguyen Le, Ron Miles, Michael Weiss, and numerous others.
Our two big bands and various small ensembles explore both traditional compositions and contemporary works, while students are challenged to compose and arrange original pieces for semesterly public performances. The Jazz Studies degree is presently offered exclusively for these instruments: trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, percussion, and double bass.
