Colorado State University features an exceptional graduate conducting program with both instrumental and choral focus areas, alongside undergraduate conducting courses. Students benefit from working with nationally recognized faculty, state-of-the-art conducting facilities, and top-tier ensembles for practical training. The university provides Master of Music degrees with specializations in Choral Conducting and Instrumental Conducting. Graduate candidates engage in challenging academic studies, weekly one-on-one lessons with primary instructors, and gain hands-on experience leading the institution's premier ensembles. Advanced conducting instruction is delivered by distinguished faculty: James Kim (choral), Wes Kenney (orchestral), and Rebecca Phillips (band). Conductors have opportunities to work with diverse repertoire spanning symphonic, operatic, and theatrical works. The program curriculum encompasses score analysis methods, Laban movement techniques, and effective rehearsal strategies. Situated in a culturally rich region, the school offers abundant musical enrichment possibilities. Qualified graduate conducting students may secure teaching assistantships, enabling them to oversee departmental choral and instrumental groups while assisting with all major CSU ensembles, including choirs, orchestras, bands, opera productions, jazz ensembles, the marching band, and pep bands.

Qualification Requirements

Bachelor's degree must be completed by the start of your graduate program.

U.S. degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution to qualify for CSU graduate admission (certificate or degree program).

Contact your department to find out if unofficial transcripts are accepted. If your department accepts unofficial transcripts, you may be admitted and registered in your first semester of courses with an unofficial transcript. Official transcripts must be submitted, prior to or during your first semester, before you can register for your second semester of graduate work. Failure to meet this condition will result in your dismissal from the Graduate School.

You will need unofficial transcripts of all collegiate work completed post-high school. Separate transcripts are required for study abroad if the courses, grades, and credits are not recorded on the transcript of the university that sponsored the study abroad.

Training course transcripts from branches of the U.S. Military that show credit received with neither grades nor degrees awarded are exempt from the transcript requirements. You must upload the front and back of transcripts and include any grading scale provided.

In general, the minimum cumulative GPA for non-provisional admittance is a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) to be admitted by the Graduate School.
