The Interior Architecture and Design program embodies the role of professional designers, who through education, expertise, and evaluation create interior spaces that improve functionality, elevate quality of life, boost efficiency, and safeguard public health and safety. The curriculum emphasizes evidence-based solutions and hands-on learning via studio courses, community projects, and internships that integrate diverse cultural, ecological, and historical contexts. This program maintains accreditation from the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), signifying its adherence to the profession's most rigorous academic benchmarks.
The Interior Architecture and Design major similarly defines professional designers as individuals who, through training, practical experience, and assessment, craft interior spaces that optimize usability, enrich daily living, enhance work performance, and ensure public wellbeing. The academic foundation combines investigative problem-solving with immersive learning through studio work, community engagement, and field placements covering multiple cultural, environmental, and heritage viewpoints. The program holds enduring CIDA accreditation, demonstrating its commitment to the field's top educational standards.

Prospective students applying for the Interior Architecture and Design major at CSU initially enroll as Pre-Interior Architecture and Design candidates. Admission to the IAD program requires completion of the Interior Architecture and Design Scenario practicum. Competitive selection into the major depends on evaluation during the IAD Scenario, where independent assessors review applicants' design writing abilities, drawing skills, analytical thinking, and conceptual approaches. Approximately 50-60 students form each year's cohort based on their IAD Design Scenario results. This annual assessment takes place every spring semester. For additional details about the Interior Architecture and Design Scenario, consult the Department of Design and Merchandising.
