The Jazz Studies Option is a specialized professional program that provides instrumental students with a comprehensive curriculum blending performance and academic coursework, fostering their growth as both jazz musicians and instructors. Participants in this program explore jazz history, theory, improvisation, teaching methods, and composition/arranging, while also receiving individualized instruction from both classical and jazz-focused faculty members.

The Bachelor of Music in Performance with a Jazz Studies concentration equips students with essential competencies for careers in jazz and contemporary music performance, while simultaneously developing the fundamental performance techniques and music scholarship found in conventional performance degrees. This program aims to cultivate performers capable of excelling in professional jazz settings or pursuing advanced studies in jazz and related musical styles.

The Jazz Studies program features performance groups including two full jazz orchestras and two intimate jazz combos. These ensembles introduce students to both traditional and modern jazz repertoire, prioritizing artistic excellence and educational value in every performance.
