Our students engage in groundbreaking research across diverse fields including condensed matter physics, applied optics, quantum phenomena, sustainable energy solutions, and subatomic particle studies, with chances to partner with national laboratories and global industry leaders. Our Physics Department provides Master's degrees in Applied Physics and Doctoral programs in Physics, while also participating in cross-disciplinary initiatives like Materials Science, Nuclear Science and Engineering, and Quantum Engineering. Prospective students may apply directly to the Physics program or these interdisciplinary options when seeking to collaborate with our faculty. Financial support through teaching/research assistantships and fellowships is accessible to eligible candidates across all four programs. Although no formal Optical Engineering program currently exists, we offer a professional graduate certificate in Optics for Engineering as an interdisciplinary option.

To demonstrate adequate preparation for the Ph.D. degree in Physics, each student must achieve a grade of 3.0 or better in each core course. Students not meeting this standard must pass oral examinations covering the relevant core courses or retake the courses with a grade of 3.0 or better within one year. This process is part of the requirement for admission to candidacy, which full time Ph.D.
The Graduate School of Colorado School of Mines is open to graduates from four-year programs at accredited colleges or universities. Admission to the Physics Department MS and PhD programs is competitive and is based on an evaluation of undergraduate performance, standardized test scores, and references. The undergraduate course of study of each applicant is evaluated according to the requirements of the Physics Department.
