For those aspiring to pioneer breakthroughs in physics research and excel in academic or industrial settings, Mines' Physics and Applied Physics graduate program provides the ideal launchpad. Our students engage in groundbreaking research across diverse fields including condensed matter physics, applied optics, quantum phenomena, sustainable energy solutions, and subatomic particle studies, with chances to partner with national laboratories and global industry leaders. Alumni develop both the expertise and professional networks to expand their scientific understanding and elevate their careers to unprecedented levels.
Our Physics Department provides Master's degrees in Applied Physics and Doctoral programs in Physics, while also participating in cross-disciplinary initiatives like Materials Science, Nuclear Science and Engineering, and Quantum Engineering. Prospective students may apply directly to the Physics program or these interdisciplinary options when seeking to collaborate with our faculty. Financial support through teaching/research assistantships and fellowships is accessible to eligible candidates across all four programs. Although no formal Optical Engineering program currently exists, we offer a professional graduate certificate in Optics for Engineering as an interdisciplinary option.
