The Sequential M.A./Ph.D. Program enables students to earn both degrees from William & Mary in a shorter timeframe compared to pursuing them at different institutions. While fulfilling all program requirements, participants will produce two in-depth research papers connected to their Ph.D. focus area rather than a single M.A. thesis.
During their initial year, students undertake two semesters of coursework and fulfill their M.A. thesis obligations, followed by three additional semesters of Ph.D.-level coursework while preparing for doctoral qualifying exams. After passing these examinations, candidates will research, write, and defend their dissertation. Throughout this process, students work closely with faculty advisors and committee members.
For detailed information about program expectations, students should review the American Studies Graduate Handbook, accessible through the Program's official website.
