Generally, participants in the dual degree program are current William & Mary JD candidates when they apply for the M.A. program. If you're admitted to the M.A. program and intend to enroll, you must notify the Law School's Associate Dean of Administration by May 15. For those accepted into the joint program at the same time, you'll need to inform the Admission Deans of both programs and will start the combined curriculum at the Law School.

The initial year is completed at the Law School. You must finish the first-year coursework before starting the other program.
During the following two to three years, you'll enroll in classes from both programs. Often, certain elective law courses will align with your American Studies focus, creating a cohesive interdisciplinary degree experience.

If your first language is not English and English is not the language of instruction at your undergraduate institution, you may submit a score from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in addition to the LSAT.
For International Applicants where English is not your native language, and if your schooling has been in a language other than English, the TOEFL or IELTS is required. Any student who has spoken a language other than English in the home should strongly consider submitting TOEFL or IELTS test scores as they give the Admission Committee additional insight into language proficiency and preparedness for law school.
