The physics graduate program at William & Mary College is built upon three foundational elements: academic studies, instructional experience, and scholarly investigation. Academic Studies: Every graduate degree candidate must complete a department-approved curriculum consisting of core and elective courses. Instructional Experience: Teaching forms a crucial component of advanced degree training, with all candidates required to fulfill teaching responsibilities for a minimum of two semesters. Scholarly Investigation: The Department engages in both experimental and theoretical research across multiple specialties, sharing findings through peer-reviewed publications, academic conferences, seminars, and books. Graduate students develop skills in conducting original physics research and are encouraged to contribute to the Department's community outreach initiatives. Applicants holding a bachelor's degree must first meet all Master's degree requirements before pursuing doctoral studies. While we don't accept students solely for terminal Master's degrees, this degree may be granted if a student completes all Master's requirements before departing the program.
