The Department of Applied Science is an interdisciplinary graduate program primarily offering a Ph.D., with select opportunities for an M.S. degree. These programs allow students to tailor their studies across various concentrations in the physical and natural sciences. Each graduate student collaborates with their advisory committee to design a personalized academic path aligned with their career aspirations. The department attracts students from diverse academic and professional backgrounds. New graduate students engage in coursework, faculty mentorship, peer collaboration, and seminar participation as part of their educational journey. The curriculum's coursework is exceptionally adaptable, developed in consultation with each student's faculty advisory committee.
To earn their degree, candidates must complete their approved course sequence, pass a comprehensive qualifying exam demonstrating mastery of their chosen field, conduct significant original research, and successfully defend their dissertation before their advisory committee in a public oral examination.
