The Department of Applied Science is an interdisciplinary graduate program primarily offering a Ph.D., with select opportunities for an M.S. degree. These programs allow students to tailor their studies across various concentrations in the physical and natural sciences. Each graduate student collaborates with their advisory committee to design a personalized academic path aligned with their career aspirations. The department attracts students from diverse academic and professional backgrounds. New graduate students engage in coursework, faculty mentorship, peer collaboration, and seminar participation as part of their educational journey. The curriculum's coursework is exceptionally adaptable, developed in consultation with each student's faculty advisory committee.
To earn their degree, candidates must complete their approved course sequence, pass a comprehensive qualifying exam demonstrating mastery of their chosen field, conduct significant original research, and successfully defend their dissertation before their advisory committee in a public oral examination.

When applying for graduate study, it is standard practice in the United States to require all applicants to have a minimum of sixteen years of schooling and an earned degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. On occasion, graduates of three-year postsecondary programs in prestigious international universities may be well qualified for admission to a graduate program at William & Mary.
Upon the recommendation of the graduate program to which you are applying, the TOEFL/IELTS requirement can be waived for applicants who will have received a degree from a college or university in which English is the primary language of instruction. A transcript is required as evidence of successful instruction in English as a primary language. Contact the graduate program to which you are applying to request such a waiver.
