The American Studies Ph.D. program is designed for individuals seeking to conduct innovative, cross-disciplinary research and whose career aspirations necessitate a doctoral degree.
Doctoral candidates must fulfill 36 credit hours of coursework along with a dissertation, typically completing the program within five to six years.
Applicants may enter the Ph.D. program after obtaining a terminal master's degree. These students will undertake three semesters of coursework while preparing for doctoral qualifying exams. After passing these examinations, candidates will research, write, and defend their dissertation. Throughout this process, students work closely with faculty advisors and committee members.
For comprehensive details about program requirements, students should review the American Studies Graduate Handbook, accessible on the Program's official website.
