Chemistry has been a cornerstone of education at William & Mary since 1772, establishing a distinguished legacy. Currently, the Chemistry Department runs one of the top undergraduate programs in the U.S., consistently graduating more majors annually than comparable institutions focused on undergraduate education. Students can pursue bachelor's degrees in chemistry, a biochemistry minor, or select from various master's degree options.
As a public liberal arts college, William & Mary combines personalized faculty mentorship with university-level research facilities. Every chemistry course, including lab sessions, is led by professors. The Integrated Science Center provides outstanding teaching labs and workspaces. Students gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge equipment through coursework and faculty-guided research projects. Active research programs led by chemistry professors welcome student participation as early as the first year. Nearly all chemistry majors complete at least one paid summer research project with faculty, with many engaging in research for multiple summers. Student contributions frequently earn co-authorship on published scientific papers. Graduates successfully enter elite doctoral programs, professional schools, or launch careers in education, healthcare, and other fields.
