Pursuing a major or minor in Japanese studies allows you to delve into this fascinating subject. You'll develop both language proficiency and cultural understanding, equipping you with specialized knowledge about Japanese society. The program offers historical perspectives, social insights, and analytical abilities that translate to various professional paths. Many students pair Japanese studies with another discipline to add regional expertise to fields like international affairs, global research, economics, cultural studies, technology, and beyond.
The Japanese Studies major requires 33 credit hours, comprising: 1) a minimum of 24 credits from JAPN courses (with at least 9 credits conducted in Japanese), and 2) 6 credits from external programs. Students are strongly advised to participate in study abroad programs in Japan after finishing JAPN 102 or higher. Up to 9 credits from Japanese university courses can be applied toward language progression, JAPN electives, or interdisciplinary electives, subject to approval.
