The Joint Degree in Film Studies maintains its core focus on cinema while expanding students' horizons. This program teaches students about image composition, the evolution of different national film traditions, the global movie business landscape, and theoretical frameworks for analyzing films. Through our partnership, learners can additionally investigate connected disciplines like television, print media, radio, and other communication forms as both artistic expressions and cultural phenomena. By examining media across different eras, students gain insights into how portrayals shape perceptions of gender, sexual orientation, national belonging, racial and ethnic backgrounds, as well as the impact of worldwide commerce and political systems. Every Film Studies student in the joint program can undertake a self-directed research endeavor, choosing between completing a dissertation at St Andrews or an Honors Thesis/Independent Study project at William & Mary.
