Located in James Blair Hall on Old Campus, the History Department is just steps away from Colonial Williamsburg. The study of history began at William & Mary in 1803. Currently, the Department includes over 35 full-time faculty members, 50 graduate students pursuing master's and doctoral degrees, and about 100 undergraduate history majors plus 35 minors who complete their studies annually.
Our curriculum and research span worldwide topics from ancient civilizations to modern times. Faculty members have earned distinguished honors for teaching excellence, academic research, and overall distinction. In 2021, US News & World Report recognized our program as the nation's premier institution for studying U.S. colonial history.
