The Master of Arts in Psychology with an Applied Social Psychology specialization equips you with expertise in social psychology, particularly its practical implementation in addressing real-world health behaviors and societal challenges.
This Applied Social Psychology program examines current studies in key social psychology domains - including persuasion techniques, attitude-behavior relationships, social transformation strategies, and group dynamics. It combines these findings with practical research methodologies and assessment approaches, emphasizing how social psychology can directly impact health and societal concerns. Health-related behaviors and other social challenges represent major worldwide issues that are not only rapidly expanding areas of behavioral research but also fields where social psychology principles guide policy development and intervention strategies - as demonstrated by organizations like the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health.
Our comprehensive MA program prepares you to utilize social psychology theories and investigative techniques to analyze health behaviors and social problems, equipping you to contribute to policy-making for positive social interventions and behavioral modifications.
Research forms a central component of our faculty and student work, structured around four specialized laboratories and institutes (Health Psychology and Prevention Science Institute, Institute for Social Issues Research, Social Identity Laboratory, Depression Research Laboratory), along with faculty-directed research teams.
Our investigations encompass diverse areas including adolescent substance abuse prevention, leadership development and social transformation, societal radicalization, discrimination studies, LGBTQ+ concerns, and civic engagement.
This STEM-certified program enables international F-1 visa students to qualify for up to 36 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) work authorization - comprising an initial 12-month period plus a 24-month STEM extension - for professional employment in the United States post-graduation.
