The PhD interfield program merges curriculum from both disciplines within the Division of Politics & Economics (DPE) to create an interdisciplinary political economy degree.
This unique doctoral program integrates advanced research across political science, economics, methodological studies, and political economy. Distinguished faculty from both fields equip students with the expertise, analytical tools, and practical experience needed for successful careers in academia, government, consulting, corporate settings, nonprofits, and beyond. Admission to the PhD interfield program requires acceptance by either the Department of Politics & Government or the Department of Economic Sciences.

The program mandates completion of at least 80 units, including core requirements, a methods minor, and major concentrations in both political science and economics.
Interfield PhD candidates must successfully complete comprehensive exams in both major disciplines, then develop and defend a dissertation proposal and final dissertation that demonstrates methodological rigor and interdisciplinary synthesis.
Affiliated with CGU's Economics and Political Economy programs, the Claremont Institute for Economic Policy Studies offers research assistant positions and connects students with relevant seminars, conferences, workshops, and professional gatherings in the field.
