Master of Arts candidates have three pathways to choose from: thesis, project, or written examination. Important to note: while the thesis path mandates meeting the department's foreign language requirement, the project and exam options do not carry this stipulation.

Thesis: Ideal for students considering PhD studies, whether immediately after their MA or later. A thesis represents a substantial scholarly work (typically 50-150 pages) that offers novel insights on a historically significant topic.

Project: In certain cases, when students possess relevant background and faculty support is available, a creative project may substitute for a conventional thesis. Approved projects might include historical narratives, documentary films, websites, or other formats endorsed by the review committee.
