Writing has been an essential human practice since ancient times, dating back to hieroglyphics. As part of Carnegie Mellon University's English program, you'll enhance your abilities in reading, composition, research, and analytical thinking while gaining a richer understanding of literary works. The program provides numerous writing and professional development opportunities through student organizations and campus publications. For those fascinated by children's literature, the Instructional Materials Center offers modern works and educational resources, while the Lucile Clarke Memorial Children's Library houses an extensive collection of over 7,000 historic and rare children's books. Whether you're pursuing a teaching or non-teaching degree or minor, our English program has options tailored to your goals. The Department of English Language and Literature provides two primary tracks: teaching-focused and non-teaching programs. These encompass concentrations in World Literature, Creative Writing, or specialized studies in secondary/elementary English education. Major requirements range from 39 to 43 credit hours, while minors require 24 to 28 hours, varying by specialization. Prospective English majors or minors should declare their intent by the end of their second year, with transfer students advised to do so in their first semester. Faculty advisors are available to assist with academic planning, graduation requirements, and teacher preparation programs.
