As a materials scientist, your role focuses on analyzing the chemical characteristics of various substances. You'll apply this understanding to enhance current materials or develop innovative ones. In this specialization, you'll master crafting nanostructures, investigate pharmaceutical advancements, and expand possibilities through biomimetics.

Similar to all chemistry students, you'll start with foundational courses in science and mathematics. You'll also participate in practical research and collaborate directly with distinguished professionals. For five decades, our capstone initiative has connected students and professors for impactful research projects. This unique program stands alone among Michigan's public institutions. Over the years, numerous students have successfully completed capstones, with many publishing their results in academic journals and showcasing their work at national conferences.

Though the capstone project represents your personal interests, you'll receive continuous support. A faculty advisor will provide guidance throughout the process to ensure your achievement. Additionally, you'll create a research poster, compose a thesis, and have opportunities to present your findings.
