CMU's therapeutic recreation program equips students with the expertise, abilities, and hands-on training required to earn national certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist. Through this major, students develop skills to deliver therapeutic interventions and leisure activities for individuals with cognitive impairments, mental health conditions, mobility limitations, substance abuse challenges, and aging-related disabilities. Recreational therapists commonly work in rehabilitation centers, psychiatric hospitals, extended care facilities, specialized camps, and community integration initiatives. As Michigan's first nationally accredited program, CMU's therapeutic recreation focus readies students for NCTRC certification. You'll learn from nationally certified instructors and acquire competencies for careers in medical centers, rehab clinics, mental health organizations, or senior care facilities. The program concludes with a clinical internship focused on implementing therapeutic and recreational services for older adults or people with developmental, emotional, physical, or cognitive challenges.
