Delve into historical studies and shape your future with a History PhD from Case Western Reserve University. Our Department of History offers three doctoral pathways: the renowned History of Science, Technology, Environment and Medicine (STEM) program - among the nation's most prestigious in its field; our innovative Social Justice History concentration examining systemic oppression and movements for equity; or our traditional History PhD allowing specialization in any faculty-supported historical period, region, or theme. Whichever path you select, you'll gain qualifications for diverse careers in academia, museums, public history, secondary education, or digital humanities.
The majority of our students benefit from complete five-year funding packages covering full tuition and providing living stipends. Your doctoral journey begins with core graduate seminars in Historiography, Method and Theory, Comparative History, and Historical Research/Writing. STEM and Social Justice track students then progress to advanced specialized coursework in their chosen concentration.
