The Bachelor of Sciences in Physics with a Biophysics Concentration program aims to equip undergraduates for careers in both biophysics and traditional physics. Graduates will gain the foundational knowledge all physicists require, covering classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermal physics/statistical mechanics, along with laboratory, data analysis, and computational skills. Additionally, they'll receive specialized training in biological sciences through customizable coursework developed with a faculty advisor, focusing on core biological concepts, biophysics, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, or medical physics. Program Student Learning Outcomes are detailed at the conclusion of this document.
This specialized track modifies the standard B.S. in Physics curriculum, formally designated as a B.S. in Physics with Biophysics Concentration. It responds to increasing enthusiasm for biophysics by providing excellent preparation for physics graduate programs, industrial research, and careers in biology, biophysics, biomedical engineering, or medical school. The concentration involves specific adjustments to the standard physics degree requirements: replacing four physics courses and two electives with a biogroup of five courses (typically selected from biology, biophysics, biochemistry, and biomedical engineering offerings) plus one technical elective. Students select these specialized courses in collaboration with their biophysics advisor.
