The Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art program offers an intensive curriculum designed for dedicated artists with clear artistic vision and advanced technical skills. This advanced program equips students for professional careers as studio artists or university-level educators through focused practice and study. Alumni emerge ready to actively participate in the art world and shape contemporary visual culture. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on studio practice, complemented by art history, theoretical studies, critical writing, graduate critiques, elective studio courses, career preparation, and self-directed projects.
This three-year, full-time terminal degree program takes a media-neutral approach, supporting diverse artistic practices while incorporating advanced art theory seminars. Qualification Requirements
In addition to the general requirements of the university, specific requirements for admission to classified graduate standing are:
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum of 30-semester units of upper-division art courses comparable to those required of a major in art at this university. The Art Department determines which courses are comparable.
Completion of a minimum of 14-semester units of upper-division studio art.
Completion of a minimum of 14-semester units in art history, a minimum of 5 should be upper-division units, and at least one course that is equivalent to AH 4250 and/or AH 5250.
A grade point average of 3.0 (B) or better in all art courses taken.
