Certificates can be obtained by both regularly enrolled students and extended education participants, signifying the successful fulfillment of a structured curriculum aimed to:
develop specific professional, vocational, or career skills, or
achieve comprehensive knowledge in a specialized area within an academic discipline, or
offer broad exposure to subject matter in either conventional or innovative interdisciplinary studies.
Some certificate programs include 6000-level courses as mandatory or optional components. Undergraduate students are ineligible to enroll in these advanced courses. Participants must complete at least two-thirds of their certificate-related coursework at the university. Credit transfers or course substitutions require approval from the relevant campus administration.
