Students pursuing a Master of Science in Psychological Research engage in hands-on supervisory and experiential coursework starting their first semester and continuing throughout the program. They contribute to research initiatives, working either collaboratively on research teams or independently with faculty guidance.
After completing their projects, students showcase their findings at various conferences such as the Sacramento Valley Psychological Association's Student Research Conference, Western Psychological Association Research Conference, and other local, regional, and national events.
The program also provides paid teaching opportunities, allowing students to serve as Teaching Associates (primary instructors) or Instructional Student Assistants for undergraduate courses and labs.
While following a foundational curriculum, the program maintains adaptable structure. Beyond standard coursework, the Department acknowledges the importance of personalized learning for specialized topics and skill development. This includes research in labs, fieldwork, or libraries, teaching experiences, and community involvement through mental health organizations, government agencies, schools, or businesses. Students can earn academic credit through individualized study or fieldwork programs for these activities.
