The Master of Arts (MA) in Biological Sciences provides specialized education in biological sciences, combining academic study with a hands-on project component. This program equips graduates for professional roles in education, government, and industry, while also serving as a foundation for doctoral studies or career advancement in teaching, research, or field-based work.
Our faculty bring diverse specializations across biological disciplines. Each student collaborates with a graduate advisor to create a customized study plan and develop their final project.
To earn the MA degree, students must complete 30 credit hours and a culminating project, which may be either a grant proposal or comprehensive literature review. The Department of Biological Sciences provides both undergraduate and graduate options, including BA and BS degrees or a Minor at the undergraduate level. Sacramento State's Biological Sciences program ranks among Northern California's most competitive, with impacted status due to high demand. Prospective majors must fulfill prerequisite coursework before applying to the program. For current admission criteria, consult the department website and schedule an advising session with the Natural Sciences Advising Center (NSAC) early in your academic planning.
