The Science Subject Matter Program (covering biology, chemistry, physics, or basic general science) fulfills the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) subject matter prerequisite for enrollment in a California Single Subject teaching credential program. This subject matter requirement, which is mandatory for credential program admission, can be satisfied either through a subject matter program (like those outlined here) or by passing a state-approved content examination (currently the California Subject Examination for Teachers, or CSET). To satisfy the subject matter program criteria, all courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C-. Additionally, aspiring public school teachers in California must complete a teaching credential program.

Subject matter programs do not constitute degrees or specializations; rather, they consist of course sequences that prepare students for teaching credential program admission. Candidates must also earn a bachelor's degree (in any major) to meet all credentialing requirements.

Qualification Requirements

An applicant who has not completed any post-secondary education after high school is considered a first-time freshman applicant. If there is a gap between the time you graduated high school and when you are applying to the University, but have not attempted or completed any college or university coursework, you are still considered a first-time freshman. Please note that an evaluation from an agency is not required or recommended as we do in-house evaluations of all foreign credentials.
