The Social Science major is available through multiple departments including Anthropology, Economics, Ethnic Studies, Geography, Government, History, Sociology, and Women's and Gender Studies. This interdisciplinary program fulfills requirements for both a Bachelor of Arts degree and prepares students for the Single Subject Teaching Credential in Social Science. The same major is also offered by departments of Anthropology, Economics, Ethnic Studies, Geography, Political Science, History, and Sociology, serving the same dual purposes.
Teaching credential candidates must additionally complete an accredited Professional Education Program and meet other standards set by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The state of California currently experiences a significant teacher shortage, with an estimated need for 300,000 new educators over the coming ten years to fill this vital yet demanding role in schools.
Given that the Social Science program spans multiple academic departments and has unique General Education overlap policies, students are strongly encouraged to seek academic advising to ensure timely program completion.
