The Science Subject Matter Program (SSMP) offers concentrations in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, and Physics, culminating in a BA degree within the chosen specialization. This program fulfills the current California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) subject-matter prerequisites for admission into a teaching credential program in California. To earn a California K-12 Teaching Credential, candidates must complete both the SSMP and a professional educator preparation program. Graduates who complete both programs become qualified to teach all four core sciences (biology, chemistry, geoscience, and physics) at the general/integrated secondary level (grades 7-12), plus their specialized subject at advanced high school levels. A sample credential might state: SCIENCE: Chemistry.

As the foundational science, physics provides the basis for comprehending most scientific and technological fields. Broadly speaking, physics examines energy, space, matter, and their interactions through governing natural laws. Specifically, physicists explore mechanics, thermodynamics, optics, electromagnetism, gravity, relativity, atomic/nuclear physics, and condensed matter physics.

The BA degree suits students pursuing high school physics instruction or seeking a liberal arts education with physics specialization. Physics students should consider enhancing their mathematical proficiency and computer skills.

Public schools urgently require qualified science educators. Physics students interested in teaching should consult the department's credential advisor (Dr. Vera Margoniner) to design their academic path and explore teaching opportunities like tutoring, grading, or school-based experiences.

There's particularly high demand for K-12 science educators. Revised State Board of Education Standards and growing interest in Biological Sciences have increased need for credentialed professionals. Biological Sciences students considering teaching careers should reach out to department credential advisors like Melanie Loo.

Qualification Requirements

An applicant who has not completed any post-secondary education after high school is considered a first-time freshman applicant. If there is a gap between the time you graduated high school and when you are applying to the University, but have not attempted or completed any college or university coursework, you are still considered a first-time freshman. Please note that an evaluation from an agency is not required or recommended as we do in-house evaluations of all foreign credentials.
