The Liberal Studies program offers an interdisciplinary major that spans diverse fields of knowledge through a multidisciplinary curriculum. This broad academic initiative fosters excellence, diversity, inclusivity, community engagement, and teamwork. Tailored for students pursuing careers as elementary or special education teachers in California or those interested in interdisciplinary learning, the program's foundation includes coursework in reading, language and literature, mathematics, natural sciences, history and social sciences, visual and performing arts, physical education, human development, health, and practical field experience.
Approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the Liberal Studies major equips future educators with comprehensive knowledge across multiple disciplines. In addition to teaching, this major serves as strong preparation for careers in government, public administration, business, management, community services, counseling, law, library science, public health, and advanced academic studies.
Given the program's complexity, students are encouraged to maintain regular contact with an advisor from the outset. Mandatory semester meetings with advisors ensure personalized guidance throughout the learning journey. To earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, students must complete 120 units and fulfill the University's foreign language requirement. Early academic advising is strongly recommended to prevent delays in meeting these requirements.
