The Liberal Studies program offers an interdisciplinary major that spans diverse fields of knowledge through a multidisciplinary curriculum. This comprehensive academic path fosters excellence, embraces diversity and inclusion, builds community, and promotes collaboration. Designed for students pursuing careers as elementary or special education teachers in California or those interested in interdisciplinary learning, the program's foundation includes coursework in reading, language and literature, mathematics, natural sciences, history and social sciences, visual and performing arts, physical education, human development, health, and practical field experience.
Approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the Liberal Studies major equips future educators with a solid foundation across multiple disciplines essential for effective teaching. In addition to teaching, this major serves as strong preparation for careers in government, public administration, business, management, community service, counseling, law, library science, public health, and advanced academic studies.
Given the program's complexity, students are encouraged to maintain regular contact with an advisor from the outset. Meeting with an advisor each semester ensures personalized guidance and hands-on learning support. To earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, students must complete 120 units and fulfill the University's foreign language requirement. Early academic advising is strongly recommended to prevent delays in meeting these requirements.
