The Liberal Studies program offers an interdisciplinary major that integrates diverse fields of knowledge through a multidisciplinary approach. This curriculum delivers a comprehensive academic experience promoting scholarly achievement, diversity and inclusion, community engagement, and teamwork. Tailored for students pursuing careers as elementary or special education teachers in California or those interested in cross-disciplinary education, the program's foundation includes coursework in reading, language and literature, mathematics, natural sciences, history and social sciences, visual and performing arts, physical education, human development, health studies, and practical field experience.
Approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the Liberal Studies major equips future educators with a solid foundation across multiple disciplines essential for effective teaching. In addition to teaching careers, this major serves as strong preparation for roles in government, public administration, business, management, community services, counseling, law, library sciences, public health, and advanced academic pursuits.
Given the program's complexity, students are encouraged to maintain regular contact with their advisors from the outset. Meeting with an advisor each semester ensures personalized guidance throughout the learning journey. To earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, students must complete 120 units and fulfill the University's foreign language requirement. Early academic planning is strongly recommended to prevent any delays in meeting these graduation requirements.
