The Art History Bachelor of Arts program offers comprehensive coursework covering Western and non-Western artistic traditions, critical theory, and visual culture spanning ancient times to today. Through lectures, seminars, independent research, fieldwork, and studio classes, students develop visual analysis skills, global awareness, art historical methodologies, and insights into curation and artistic creation. The program features four specialization tracks: Early Modern European Art, Asian Art, Art of the Americas, or Modern and Contemporary Art. This degree delivers both a well-rounded liberal arts education and career-ready training for various professions or graduate studies. Those planning to pursue Art History at the graduate level receive personalized guidance from faculty mentors to prepare for advanced academic work.
Students can arrange hands-on learning opportunities at regional institutions like the Crocker Art Museum and Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, as well as other public and private galleries. Study abroad options are available through Sacramento State's Office of International Programs and Global Engagement, along with the CSU International Program, allowing students to earn university credit for semester or year-long studies at partner institutions worldwide, including locations in Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Australia.
