The Master of Music in Composition provides comprehensive graduate-level training in musical composition. This program caters to students seeking in-depth exploration of modern compositional approaches, as well as those aspiring to teach at collegiate levels.
For over sixty years, CSUN's composition program has built strong recognition both regionally and nationally. Our distinguished faculty composers have been showcased at renowned international music festivals, while graduates have established thriving careers in academia and the music industry. Composition students at CSU Northridge enjoy regular performance and recording opportunities on campus, partnerships with professional ensembles and visiting artists, and research projects focusing on modern musical styles and methods. The Music Department provides extensive graduate-level composition studies, with the Master of Music degree tailored for those pursuing advanced work in contemporary composition or academic teaching careers. Annual scholarships ranging from $500 to $2000 are granted each spring to numerous new and returning students. Qualified candidates may also secure part-time positions supervising computer labs or instructing introductory music courses.

Qualification Requirements

Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all undergraduate units
Bachelor's degree, including preparation equivalent to the undergraduate Music major.
Entrance portfolio and interview required. See Composition Audition for entrance requirements.
Taking the department graduate placement examinations in Theory and History prior to first enrollment. Students failing the placement exams may repeat them once or complete the appropriate review courseworkMUS 500 Music Theory Review and/or MUS 501 Music History Reviewwith a grade of C or better.
Students must demonstrate the equivalent of an undergraduate recital in composition. Students lacking this prerequisite may be asked to present an undergraduate-level recital during the first year of the graduate program.
