The 30-unit Master of Arts in Visual Arts focuses on cultivating visual thinking and creative problem-solving skills in art, while highlighting the significance of critical analysis, experimentation, innovation, and perception. Students explore art history and its cultural, political, and social impact, with access to university-wide resources and specialized Department of Art and Design facilities. Concentrations include Ceramics, Drawing, Illustration, Painting, Photography/Video, Printmaking, and Sculpture. The department aims to provide a well-rounded visual arts education through three core disciplines: art education, art history, and studio practice. Students learn to appreciate visual reasoning and artistic problem-solving while understanding art's historical legacy and its connection to societal and cultural contexts.
Situated in the greater Los Angeles area, CSUN's painting program benefits from proximity to renowned institutions like LACMA, MOCA, the Getty, and major gallery hubs in Culver City, Santa Monica, and beyond. This exposure keeps students engaged with both historical and contemporary painting practices through firsthand experiences. Visiting artists, gallery visits, and field trips leverage LA's vibrant art scene, preparing students for professional challenges. CSUN's painting faculty are actively exhibiting artists with global recognition. The program begins with foundational painting techniques, advancing to historical and contemporary themes while honing technical skills and analytical thinking. Upper-level and graduate students examine critical theory, positioning their work within current artistic dialogues. They develop independent portfolios beyond coursework, ultimately refining their unique artistic voice under faculty mentorship.
