Family and Consumer Sciences explores the connections between individuals and their living environments. This field examines how physical, biological, social, and economic factors influence human behavior and growth. Those pursuing this major develop skills to enhance living standards for people, families, and neighborhoods by addressing challenges in food science and nutrition, clothing and home design, parenting and family dynamics, and household economics.
Learners can choose from six specialization tracks: Fashion Design and Retail, Consumer Services, Family and Consumer Sciences Instruction, Family Development, Interior Architecture, and Nutritional Science and Food Technology. Every student completes five foundational classes covering universal principles across all concentrations, plus coursework in their chosen focus. Hands-on learning occurs through laboratory sessions, design studios, and specialized facilities like the Child and Family Research Lab, Consumer Guidance Center, and Marilyn Magaram Center for Nutritional Studies. Professional internships provide real-world application, while leadership development happens through the Family and Consumer Sciences Student Organization and the Kappa Omicron Nu honors society.
