The Jazz Studies concentration within the Bachelor of Music program covers improvisation, music theory, historical studies, and composition, with a strong focus on performance (admission requires an audition). Final requirement: a sixty-minute performance. Students can participate in various jazz ensembles such as the Jazz A Big Band, Studio Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Lab Big Band, Latin Jazz Ensemble, Upscale Vocal Jazz Ensemble, plus innovative groups like NuVeau Art Ensemble and NuJazz Performance Ensemble, which showcase student-created works and experimental arrangements.
Alumni from the music department have secured rewarding careers globally, working as educators in academic institutions, certified music therapists, orchestral and band directors, published composers, acclaimed recording artists, performers with prestigious opera companies and symphony orchestras, studio musicians, professional ensemble players, and many are engaged in the entertainment sector across Southern California and beyond.
