The Secondary Teaching track equips students aiming to teach mathematics in secondary schools. Those choosing this path can pursue a postbaccalaureate teacher preparation program to obtain a Preliminary Single Subject Credential in Mathematics. Eligible students may also join either the Four-Year Integrated Mathematics (FYI-Math) or Junior-Year Integrated Mathematics (JYI-Math) Teacher Credential Programs, which combine bachelor's degree completion with credential requirements, enabling graduates to teach immediately. These pathways are recognized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for the Single Subject Credential in Mathematics.
Students working toward a B.A. or B.S. degree can pair Mathematics with a second major. With advisor approval, 6 upper-division elective units may be fulfilled by courses from the second major, while remaining electives must be mathematics courses. In exceptional cases, the lower-division physics requirement may be substituted with relevant coursework from the second major, pending approval from both an advisor and the department chair.
