The History department provides a Bachelor of Arts degree in History for undergraduates. History majors enroll in a combination of broad survey courses, specialized upper-level classes, and mandatory seminars focused on historical research techniques and analytical skills. The program offers extensive course options, allowing students to pursue their individual interests. This major cultivates abilities in critical analysis, investigative methods, and written communication. Earning a History degree equips students with understanding of key civilizations' political, economic, social, and intellectual evolution - particularly the United States, Western societies, and one additional global region. The curriculum covers major historical figures, events, concepts, and connections fundamental to historical scholarship, along with diverse historical methodologies. Students gain insight into: (a) historians' approaches to studying the past, (b) the strengths and weaknesses of different historical works, and (c) the development of history as an academic field.

The History Department excels in both instruction and scholarly investigation. Faculty members have earned multiple University honors for exceptional teaching and publications. Both undergraduate and graduate programs emphasize research and writing proficiency while offering studies in U.S., European, Latin American, Middle Eastern, and Asian histories. Department scholars examine the past through multiple lenses including political, economic, urban/social, cultural, gender, legal, and military/diplomatic history. Advanced tutorials and seminars feature close faculty-student collaboration in analyzing original documents and contemporary scholarship. Special initiatives and research seminars - some including visits to archives and historical locations - encourage student investigations. The internship program enables participants to acquire professional experience in various fields while earning academic credit.
